Zirconium Alloy Plate and Sheet
Zirconium is a soft, malleable, silver-coloured metal, which allows pure zirconium to be rolled into sheets uniformly composed of pure zirconium metal. A zirconium sheet resists corrosion from acids, alkalis, solvents and other caustic substances — including seawater — with the one notable exception of hydrofluoric acid, which can attack zirconium sheeting. This resistance comes from a nanometre-thick passivation layer that naturally forms on the surface of the sheet, protecting it from oxidation and reactions with other chemicals.
Key Advantages
- Resists corrosion from acids, alkalis, solvents and seawater
- Self-forming, nanometre-thick passivation layer protects against oxidation
- Soft and malleable — rolls readily into uniform sheet and plate
- Only notable weakness is hydrofluoric acid exposure
